Track 10 from Wendy James 10th album The Shape Of History

Wendy: “I had recently watched Transvision Vamp performing ‘Trash City’ live in Hamburg, Germany and the sequencers were so pulsing and exiting, enormous sounding. I’d also had my mind blown by the music of Sebastian for the runway of the Saint Laurent fashion shows in Paris. Very operatic, very orchestral, somehow very ’80’s. I grew up, musically, in the age of the sequencer, drawn into the future by Ridley Scott’s movie ‘Bladerunner’. Futuristic, glamorous in seedy kind of way, overcrowded and the high skyscrapers, where the masters of the universe observed and policed down below. Also: Polanski’s movie ‘Frantic’, Beineix’s movie ‘Diva’, European dark electro and Klaus Nomi ‘The Cold Song’. I wrote ‘Freedomsville’ on guitar like all my songs, in the end I didn’t use sequencers at all, it’s all real humans playing very rhythmically on repeat for 6 minutes straight. I also like the lyrical sleight of hand, in Verse 2 I’m singing about orphans and refugees, it’s not an obvious lyric for a hi tempo electro.”

Lyrics

Deep inside, Deep inside

Laughing and singing cowboy rhythms
Learning to love, learning to love
You can’t measure life
Without learning to love, learning to love

C’mon C’mon C’mon
C’mon and dance with me
It’s easy easy easy easy easy easy easy easy
This is Freedomsville, man
C’mon and dance with me
It’s easy easy easy easy easy easy easy easy easy

Deep inside, Deep inside

When I move my hips
When I move my eyes
In a certain way
I know it all by heart

When I’m just going on a smile
When I close my eyes
A very delicate touch
I know it all by heart

Freedomsville

Deep inside, Deep inside

The orphans, the unemployed
The refugees, the unhappy in love
Life is so hard sometimes
When you think you got it made
You just need to be wanted, need to be loved

C’mon C’mon C’mon
C’mon and dance with me
It’s easy easy easy easy easy easy easy easy
This is Freedomsville, man
C’mon and dance with me
It’s easy easy easy easy easy easy easy easy easy

C’mon C’mon C’mon
C’mon and dance with me
It’s easy easy easy easy easy easy easy easy
This is Freedomsville, man
C’mon and dance with me
It’s easy easy easy easy easy easy easy easy easy

When you move your hips
When you move your eyes
In a certain way
You know it all by heart

When you’re just going on a smile
When you close your eyes
A very delicate touch
You know it all by heart

Freedomsville

Music coming through
I know it all by heart
Music coming through
I know it all by heart
Music coming through
I know it all by heart
Music coming through
I know it all by heart
Music coming through
I know it all by heart
Music coming through
I know it all by heart

Track 3 from Wendy James 10th album The Shape Of History

Wendy: “I needed this song to soar, to be ethereal, uplifting and exultant, cresting a darker undertone with emotional builds and dynamics. The magnificence of human nature when it rises up in the face of adversity and meets great challenges, endures great suffering and remains graceful and humble, with awe inspiring dignity. The impermanence of one’s own existence, merely the passage of eternity. The will to remain in the light. This song does exactly what a song should do, even with no lyrics to guide you, one will feel the weight of emotions, of history, of life, sometimes lifting up, sometimes falling down and sometimes comfortably numb. Some of the lyrics are personal to me, there is a subjective truth here and I get a wry pleasure from them, but I’ve written broadly too, everyone can relate.”

Lyrics

Everything is going fine
Cocktail hour begins at five
I’d kiss you but I just washed my hair
How to be elegant, how to be brutal
You don’t have to do anything
Just what you’re doing

If you say too much
You lose some of that mystery
A history which is no history at all

I’m better than you deserve
And a lot better than you pay

(All day long)

Digging down to meet the dead
Picked up by your boots straps
Don’t complain
Remember, people get killed in the middle of the road

If you say too much
You lose some of that mystery
A history which is no history at all

Everything Is Magic
A dream passing over us
My emotions, my tears
My hopes no less sincere
How close we’ve always been

It all comes back
Stays in my mind
Stays in my eyes
It’s all, all kindsa magic
It’s all, all kindsa magic

It all comes back
Stays in my mind
Stays in my eyes
It’s all, all kindsa magic
It’s all, all kindsa magic

It has been my intention to keep a light heart
To only be in places where the lights are bright
A silence which comes with it’s own kind of power
Is a punctuation mark on a sentence which is already written

If you say too much
You lose some of that mystery
A history which is no history at all

Looking back on my life
Who am I dreaming of?
Who do I really love?
Who will I see?

Everything Is Magic
A dream passing over us
My emotions, my tears
My hopes no less sincere
How close we’ve always been

It all comes back
Stays in my mind
Stays in my eyes
It’s all, all kindsa magic
It’s all, all kindsa magic
Everything Is Magic

Track 7 from Wendy James 10th album The Shape Of History

Wendy: “For survival one has to know how to close down peripheral noise. How to block out distractions, the buzz-buzz-buzzing of irrelevant irritations, from the myriad interference aimed at you. Know what matters and what does not. In all walks of life this surely is true, but I’m certain, for me, in the music business and throughout fame ‘Never Mind The Bollocks’ has been essential. Meet it head on, eye to eye, toe to toe. It’s not the music friendship, it’s the music business. This song is, as you would expect to be, up in your grill! Fully engaged, locked and loaded with highly explosive alt psyche punk and a little ‘Monkees’ thrown in for good measure!”

Lyrics

V1. Make a place available to the eyes, in certain ways
It is no longer available to the imagination

BR1. I did not know what to say
It’s all a bit crazy
Huh huh huh

CH1. Do You Dig It? Do You Love It? Is It Groovy? x3
Huh huh huh

RES1. You look ‘em dead in the eyes and pretend you’re one of ‘em
Dead in the eyes and pretend you’re one of ‘em
Dead in the eyes and pretend you’re one of ‘em

V2. I took my risks, I took my chances, one last cry from the heart of the artist
That’s old hat jack, that’s for squares
Never meant nothing to nobody
No to the duh, big surprise!

BR2. I did not know what to say
It’s all so fucking crazy
Huh huh huh

CH2. Do You Dig It? Do You Love It? Is It Groovy? x3
Huh huh huh

RES2. You look ‘em dead in the eyes and pretend you’re one of ‘em
Dead in the eyes and pretend you’re one of ‘em
Dead in the eyes and pretend you’re one of ‘em

REF1. Are you still trying to figure if it’s right or wrong? x3

V3. I got to get to where I’m going to the top
It’s as clear as the vodka I keep in the icebox
Foolish names and foolish faces
Often appear in public places
Why don’t you give yourself a break
Let yourself off the hook

BR3. I did not know what to say
It’s all a bit crazy
Huh huh huh huh huh huh

CH3. Do You Dig It? Do You Love It? Is It Groovy? x3
Huh huh huh

CH4. Do You Dig It? Do You Love It? Is It Groovy? x3
Huh huh huh

RES3. You look ‘em dead in the eyes and pretend you’re one of ‘em
Dead in the eyes and pretend you’re one of ‘em
Dead in the eyes and pretend you’re one of ‘em

OUTRO CH5. Do You Dig It? Do You Love It? Is It Groovy? x4

Track 13 from Wendy James 10th album The Shape Of History

Wendy: “Some things never change, I’ll always be the wild girl dancing on table tops till dawn. I love the movie ‘Smithereens’ (1982) by director Susan Seidelman (before she made ‘Desperately Seeking Susan’). That movie woke me up, a clarion call! Where I belonged! Where I was headed! Downtown NYC. I had my first crush from that movie! Richard Hell is so pouty, so mean, but quite nice too?! The opening scene with actress Susan Berman as Wren, going down into the subway and stealing the two-tone sunglasses out of the hands of another passenger, all to the hypnotic sound of The Feelies ‘The Boy With The Perpetual Nervousness’ was everything I wanted! Wren goes to the Peppermint Lounge every night to hand out flyers for herself. It’s a rock n roll look at broke down NYC, The Bowery and The Lower East Side. For me, this is heaven! My teenage in Ladbroke Grove had it’s share of misdeeds, scrapes and hi capers in the West London underworld, but when I listen to my New York musician friends talk about their time in no electricity lofts, no elevators, rats, junkies, thieves, my heart goes zing! So that’s what this is! It’s ‘The Shape Of History’ my history. It’s Desperately Seeking Susan, It’s Smithereens, it’s Scorsese’s ‘After Hours’ it’s CBGB, it’s Max’s Kansas City, The Peppermint Lounge, it’s downtown NYC, it’s Cindy Wilson screaming “I’ll give you fish, I’ll give you candy” It’s me, forever, dancing on tables tops til dawn.”

Lyrics

Age deepens all feelings you innocent goon
We are moving toward the end of the past tense
Obsolete, giggling, shrieking, tumbling “You go girl, you go!”
Turned upside down by the stereo boom, wall to wall
Dancers flipped, it hit a nerve, it’s going to be fun from now on

The social kiss, life’s a gas, with a camera flash
Pow Flash Pow Blam “Hey, I saw you on tv last night”
This is the moment, it could be so perfect, 331/3, 45, 78
Feel it! It is a feeling, we really got down in there
Here is everything we want, right here in so many hearts

Beautiful things can happen
Survey the scene with a half smile on
The Shape Of History
Her cotton candy, bright blonde hair
Fine boned face, like a star
She turns on The Shape Of History

Some days when she wakes up, she doesn’t feel like getting up at all…
No music! No clothes! Not seeing anyone at all!
No dancing on tabletops till dawn, no bums, no creeps, no hangers on, no phonies
She is happy, just doing nothing, she is not talking, let someone else do the talking
There is not a minute to spare, chin up, put your hands like this…

Beautiful things can happen
Survey the scene with a half smile on
The Shape Of History
Her cotton candy, bright blonde hair
Fine boned face, like a star
She turns on The Shape Of History

Beautiful things can happen
Survey the scene with a half smile on
The Shape Of History
Her cotton candy, bright blonde hair
Fine boned face, like a star
She turns on The Shape Of History
